Wine has woven itself into decades of our family’s culture and traditions. Thinking back on some of the most memorable times we have shared together, I can say with a fond confidence that wine was likely present. Our first vineyard was planted when my children were born and they would crush the years harvest in a tub with their bare feet. For holidays my father would sneak down to the cellar to uncover a dusty bottle of a perfect age and vintage, returning it to the table with a mischievous twinkle in his eye. Now I can see a bottle of our family’s wine with my late daughter’s artwork on the label, being served at local restaurants and in our tasting room.
There have been generations of Summers born and raised on our farm in Charlottesville, deeply rooting our family to the rolling blue mountains, green fields and the charming city of Mr. Jefferson. It is with this admiration for our home as well as the natural bounties it produces, that we set out to strengthen and maintain the wine culture of Virginia with our own vineyard, Knight’s Gambit.

Knight’s Gambit Vineyard is over five acres of Petit Verdot, Pinot Grigio, Merlot and Cabernet Franc located in the Monticello AVA on a rolling hillside facing the Blue Ridge Mountains near Whitehall, Virginia. Knight’s Gambit was established in 2003, and provided grapes to various local wineries. We are now producing and selling our own wines, Meritage, Petit Verdot, Pinot Grigio and Chardonnay under the Knight’s Gambit label. Our wines are available locally, in select wine shops and restaurants, and in our tasting room.
